Medea was an immortal sorceress/enchantress, the granddaughter of the sun God Helios, whose aunt is Circe, the witch who ensnared Odysseus’s crew. Thus, she embodies the qualities of darkness and light. She was the daughter of King Aeetes of Colchis, and was the devotee of the Goddess Hecate (often associated with witches, magic, ghosts, crossroads, and is generally thought of as dark).

(CALL TO ADVENTURE) When Jason and his Argonauts came to retrieve her father’s Golden Fleece, she immediately fell in love with Jason, and (CALL)thus made a deal with him. (AID FROM SUPERNATURAL) She would use her powers to help him retrieve the fleece if he married her. Jason was given a set of near-impossible tasks from Aeetes, and Medea helped him escape all of them. He was able to “romp through the trials” due to her witchery. Fulfilling his promise, Jason takes her and her younger brother Absyrtis away with him. (CROSS INTO UNKNOWN)As Aeetes is pursuing them, Medea cut up her younger brother and threw the pieces behind so that her father would have to stop and give them a proper burial.

She returned with Jason to his home of Lolcus, (MARRIAGE)where they were married. She used her witchery to raise all sorts of hell,(ROAD OF TRIALS) including turning the king of Lolcus’s (Pelias, who overthrew Jason’s father Aeson) daughters to murdering him. After that, Jason and Medea fled to Corinth, where Medea bore him two children, and (REACHING BOTTOM) later Jason forsook her for King Creon’s daughter. (BEGINNING) Medea sent Creusa (the new bride) a crown and a robe, which burned the flesh from her body, and ended up killing Creon, who tried to embrace his dying daughter. Medea then killed her and Jason’s children in spite, and (MAGICAL FLIGHT)fled Corinth, in a chariot pulled by winged serpents that belonged to her grandfather Helios.

She went on to (MARRIAGE) marry the king of Athens, the old Aegeus, and (AID FROM THE SUPERNATURAL), using her magic, bore him a son named Medus. But before Medea, Aegeus had another son, Theseus, the hero who slayed the Minotaur. She was then unsuccessful at tricking Aegeus into poisoning him, and fled with Medus to another country, which he ended up ruling, called Media.

Believe it or not, she is rumored to be hanging around the Elysian fields.
